Women Who Ran: Lulu Finch

About Lulu Finch (1887–1987)

In 1919, Lulu Finch ran an unsuccessful campaign for the Grand Rapids Board of Education. At the time of her campaign, Finch was president of the Congress School Mothers’ Club, an organization then publicly at odds with Grand Rapids School Superintendent W.A. Greeson for his “autocratic” and “czarlike” behavior.

Although Finch did not win a seat on the school board, she did stay involved in local school affairs. In 1921, she was reelected for a fourth term as president of the Congress School Parent Teacher Association, which seems to have evolved from the Congress School Mothers’ Club. And that same year she attended the Michigan Parent Teacher Association convention as a delegate.

Later in life, Lulu and her husband Glenn E. Finch moved to South Haven. They are buried in Lakeview Cemetery there.
